THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Le Moulin De Lourmarin
Le Moulin sits in the center of Lourmarin village, right across from the château in an 18th-century former oil mill. This is a completely different Provence experience than the hilltop palace hotels. With just 28 rooms, the property functions as much as a village gathering spot as it does a hotel. Locals come for coffee and to browse the market from the terrace, there's a café-grocery called Les Commissions where you can pick up regional products, and the Bacheto restaurant serves Provençal dishes in a vaulted dining room that's designed for sharing plates and conversation. The rooms have terracotta tiles, sisal floors, untreated plaster walls, and Provençal fabrics. Classic rooms are genuinely small, so book a Superior room if space matters to you. The design is natural materials and warm tones rather than maximalist interiors or antiques. There's a pool in the garden surrounded by lime trees, and guests can also use the pool at Le Galinier, the sister property a five-minute walk away. The whole hotel has this lived-in, unprecious feeling where you're encouraged to relax rather than worry about being in a fancy place. Lourmarin itself is one of the prettiest villages in Luberon, with a weekly market, art galleries, cafés, and the kind of authenticity that hasn't been polished away by tourism. Albert Camus lived here and is buried in the village cemetery. The village has actual residents and a real rhythm to it. You're about 35 kilometers from Aix-en-Provence and close to hiking trails in the Luberon Natural Park. The atmosphere is relaxed and bohemian in a way that feels genuinely Provençal rather than styled. Le Moulin works when you want to be in a village rather than looking down at one from a hilltop château. It's for people who prefer small and authentic over grand and formal, who want to ride bikes to vineyards and shop at local markets rather than having everything orchestrated by a concierge. The hotel is casual and social, the kind of place where you might end up chatting with locals at the bar or sharing a table on the terrace. It's charming without trying hard, and the price point is significantly lower than the Luberon's palace hotels while still delivering real style and comfort.
