THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Le Galinier
Lourmarin is one of those Provençal villages that earns the designation of most beautiful without quite becoming a prisoner to it. The Friday market under the plane trees, the Renaissance château, the galleries and café terraces on the narrow streets, the light in the late afternoon when the Luberon turns violet behind the rooftops: it is a village that functions as one might hope, which is to say without self-consciousness. Le Galinier is on its edge, two minutes on foot from the centre, an 18th-century bastide set in gardens that have a charmingly wild, slightly overgrown quality, lavender and verbena in the air, rose beds that have grown into something beyond the formal, a pétanque court under the trees. The 16 rooms, suites, and apartments are spread across the main farmhouse and several stone outbuildings, each individually furnished with thick walls, terracotta floors, exposed beams, linen sofas, and the kind of vintage Provençal pieces that arrive over time rather than being sourced all at once. Some have freestanding baths in the room, some have private terraces, the larger apartments have fully equipped kitchens and can sleep small groups. The pool looks out over the gardens and the Luberon hills. Breakfast is served on the terrace under ancient plane trees, local pastries and seasonal fruit, and the Bacheto restaurant at the sister property Le Moulin in the village square is the evening option, with a terrace looking out at the château. The property can be taken in its entirety for events or celebrations, and regularly is, but it works equally well as a guest house where a few rooms are booked and the grounds are shared. The staff, led by house manager Marie-Lise, are the kind that make the difference between a place being pleasant and being remembered. This is a hotel for people who want the Luberon properly: the markets, the hilltop villages, the vineyards, the Abbey of Sénanque surrounded by lavender in late June. Gordes is forty minutes by car, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue with its Sunday antiques market is forty-five. A car is necessary and earns its place every day. The short version: Sixteen rooms, suites, and apartments in an 18th-century bastide on the edge of Lourmarin, with fragrant gardens, a pool overlooking the Luberon hills, and the Friday market two minutes on foot. Provence at exactly the right pace.
