THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Grand Hotel Tremezzo
An Art Nouveau palace built in 1910 on the western shore of Lake Como, directly facing Bellagio across the water. The De Santis family has run it for over a century. Ninety rooms and suites spread across the main palace and 18th-century Villa Emilia next door. The architecture is Belle Époque with period furnishings, ornamental frames, Como silk drapes, gilded cornices. Corner Lake View Deluxe rooms have French windows on two sides with views from the bathroom. The Rooftop Grand Suites are sleek and contemporary with terraces. The Signature Suites (named after women integral to the hotel's history) have separate sitting rooms and Jacuzzi tubs. Suite Greta is the crown jewel, named for Garbo, gold and saffron tones, vast terrace, master bathroom with separate shower and Jacuzzi. Three pools, including the floating pool that sits directly on Lake Como, not just lakeside, actually on the water. There's a new sandy lido on the lakefront, floodlit clay tennis courts, and a park with botanical gardens. Adjacent Villa Carlotta (built 1745, later gifted to a Prussian princess) is steps away with its famous flower gardens. The T Spa occupies three levels of an 18th-century building with frescoed ceilings and mosaics. Infinity pool, panoramic sauna, and treatments using Santa Maria Novella products and local natural ingredients. The spa suite and hammam are available for private bookings. La Terrazza Gualtiero Marchesi serves the signature dishes of Italy's "father of modern Italian cuisine", open ravioli, gilded saffron risotto, gourmet traditional cuisine executed by head chef Osvaldo Presazzi. L'Escale Trattoria handles casual Italian food. Da Giacomo al Lago at T Beach focuses on fish dishes with lake views. T Pizza prepares wood-fired pizza. The restaurants operate at different formality levels. Villa Sola Cabiati, a separate 16th-century property with six suites and private staff, is available for exclusive booking when you need full villa privacy with hotel services. It's reached by car or boat from the main property. The hotel closes November through March, reopening March 20. This is a seasonal operation, not year-round, which affects booking windows. This hotel works for people who want the classic Lake Como experience with Belle Époque architecture and family-run hospitality.
