THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Gidleigh Park
Down a narrow lane that runs two miles out of Chagford and gets narrower the further you go, past a fork and over a small bridge, a Tudor-style country house built in 1928 by an Australian shipping magnate appears at the end of the track, surrounded by 107 acres of wooded valley with the upper Teign running through it. Gidleigh Park has been one of Britain's defining country house hotels since the Hendersons opened it in 1977, is now owned by the Brownsword family, holds five red stars from the AA, a Relais & Châteaux membership, and a kitchen with the kind of pedigree that has made Chagford itself one of the most serious food villages in the country. The exterior is half-timbered Tudor, the interior unexpectedly Arts and Crafts, restored with such care that the original 1928 bones and the careful modern additions are impossible to tell apart. There are 24 bedrooms in the main house, each one done differently, plus a thatched two-bedroom Pavilion in the grounds with its own kitchen and sitting room for families or longer stays. Some of the suites have marble bathrooms with double showers, steam rooms and saunas built in; the loft suite works for families; the spa suites are designed for couples who want to stay in the room. Public rooms run on antique furniture, enormous flower arrangements that change with the season, oil paintings that have hung there for decades, and afternoon tea served in front of a fire as the standard rhythm of the house. The restaurant is the destination, two Michelin stars over multiple generations of chefs, ingredients from the kitchen garden, honey from the hotel's own bees, a wine cellar that is genuinely one of the great British lists. The grounds are the other half of the experience, an 18-hole putting green designed by Peter Alliss, a grass tennis court, croquet on the lawn, fly fishing on the Teign for those who know how, and a boot room by the back door for everyone else heading onto Dartmoor on foot. The river runs loud enough that you hear it from most rooms with the windows open. This is unmistakably an old-school British country house hotel, dressed appropriately for dinner, no children under eight on weekends in the restaurant, a level of formality that some guests come specifically to enjoy and others find pleasantly out of step with everywhere else. You should not come if you want something contemporary, casual, or built for the Instagram generation; if a coat and a proper pair of shoes for dinner feels like a constraint; or if you cannot enjoy three hours over a tasting menu without checking your phone. You should come for one of the most considered country house experiences left in England, a wooded valley to yourself, a kitchen that has trained half the serious chefs in the West Country, and the kind of holiday that ends with you walking out across the moor in borrowed boots and coming back to a roaring fire. The short version: A 1928 Tudor-and-Arts-and-Crafts country house on the edge of Dartmoor, 24 individually styled keys plus a two-bedroom thatched Pavilion, two Michelin stars in the kitchen, 107 acres of valley with the River Teign running through it, run with old-fashioned conviction.
