THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London
The building opened in 1889 as Hyde Park Court, an exclusive apartment block that became one of the tallest buildings in London. It converted to the Hyde Park Hotel in 1902 with César Ritz as consultant. There's a historic entrance facing Hyde Park that was sealed by royal decree because King George V wouldn't allow advertising signage facing the park. It's still reserved for the royal family, though guests can request permission from the Royal Parks to use it for special occasions. The hotel became a Mandarin Oriental in 1996 and underwent its largest renovation in 120 years, reopening in April 2019. Hong Kong designer Joyce Wang reimagined all 181 rooms and suites, taking inspiration from Hyde Park, the golden age of travel, and Art Deco detailing. The location is the whole point. In front, Knightsbridge with Harrods two minutes away. Behind, 350 acres of Hyde Park with views of the Royal Horse Guards passing daily. You're between glorious royal parkland and one of London's most expensive shopping streets. Knightsbridge tube is two minutes, Harvey Nichols and Sloane Street are walkable, Royal Albert Hall is 15 minutes on foot. Joyce Wang's rooms feature Hyde Park-inspired botanical textures, soft muted colors, Art Deco touches, and bespoke furniture. Cork wallpaper brushed with silver leaf references bark on park trees. Bedside sconces feature clasp jewel details that look like jewelry when illuminated, nodding to crown jewels from royal ceremonies the hotel once hosted. The penthouse spans the entire ninth floor with five private terraces and panoramic London views. Dinner by Heston Blumenthal holds two Michelin stars and serves historic British gastronomy reimagined from 14th-century cookbooks. Each dish lists its century of origin. The signature Meat Fruit (chicken liver parfait shaped like a mandarin orange) dates to 1500. The dining room has floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking Hyde Park with full kitchen views. The Aubrey serves Japanese izakaya, The Rosebery does award-winning afternoon tea, and there's the Mandarin Bar. The spa has 13 treatment rooms, a 17-meter pool, amethyst crystal steam room, vitality pool, and 24-hour gym. This is for people who want proper London luxury in the most prime location imaginable. The clientele is international travelers who stay at Mandarin Orientals worldwide, serious Knightsbridge shoppers, and couples celebrating special occasions who want impeccable service and two-Michelin-star dining on-site. If you want boutique and quirky, look elsewhere. If you want grand dame luxury with flawless service, historic significance, and a location between royal parkland and Harrods, this is it.
