Saint James is one of those Paris addresses that feels almost unreal the first time you arrive. A private château hidden behind gated gardens in the 16th, it sits on the site of Paris's first hot air balloon airfield from 1783. You step through the entrance and the noise of the city disappears. Laura Gonzalez redesigned the interiors recently and they're rich and a little theatrical in the best way. Art Deco mixed with Art Nouveau florals, unexpected colors, rooms that feel collected rather than designed. The top floor rooms sit under a glass roof, some with little winter gardens built into the space. The Guerlain Spa has a 15-meter pool under glass, and the library bar has 12,000 books! Bellefeuille is the Michelin-starred restaurant that opens onto the garden. In summer they serve under hot air balloon-shaped pergolas on the terrace, a nod to the airfield history. The garden is the real surprise, peaceful, private, with tables scattered beneath the trees. On a warm evening it's one of the loveliest spots in Paris to sit with wine. The 16th is residential and quiet, closer to Bois de Boulogne than tourist Paris, though you're still walking distance to Arc de Triomphe and Trocadéro. Saint James suits people who want romance without cliché and luxury without stiffness. Stay here if you like the idea of slipping into your own little world while still being minutes from everything. It feels rare, intimate, and very Paris.
