THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Pig in the Cotswolds
The Pig’s Cotswolds property sits just outside Cirencester in the former Barnsley House, a handsome honey-stone manor with gardens originally designed by Rosemary Verey. It feels quietly iconic in that British way: nothing loud, everything considered, and immediately grounding if you have just come from London. The atmosphere here is relaxed but smart. You will see London couples in good knitwear escaping for forty-eight hours, small families who know their way around a weekend away, and older regulars who have been following The Pig openings for years. People read the papers at breakfast rather than scroll. Dogs sleep under tables. No one is performing their stay. Rooms are spread between the main house and a few outbuildings. They are deliberately unpolished: vintage furniture that feels solid, linens with weight, warm lighting, the kind of bed you sink into after a long day outside. A few rooms have deep tubs positioned beside windows. Others look out over the kitchen garden or the orchard. For a first visit to the Cotswolds, one of the Stable Yard rooms strikes the right balance of space, quiet, and early morning light. The kitchen sets the tone for the whole property. Menus shift constantly because the kitchen garden and nearby producers decide what is available. Expect clean, confident cooking: local fish, slow braises, sharp salads, proper vegetables. Lunch at the Village Pub down the lane, which belongs to the hotel, is absolutely worth doing. It is the sort of place where the fire is always on and everyone somehow looks like they are having a good day. The Fieldhouse Spa sits in the orchard behind the house with a hydro-pool facing the fields, a sauna, and a steam room. It is simple and quiet. It is more about resetting than spa culture. For first timers in the Cotswolds, the location works beautifully. Cirencester is minutes away for coffee, books, and a wander. Bibury and its stone cottages are close enough for an early morning stroll before the crowds. If you like walking, this area is full of easy scenic routes. Bring shoes you can actually walk in. Stay here if you want comfort over ceremony, great cooking, and a sense of countryside life that feels natural rather than staged. It is a gentle, stylish introduction to the Cotswolds and a hotel people return to without feeling the need to announce it.

What to Know Before You Go
Where you'll be
A few notes on your visit.
The Kitchen Garden is the star: The entire restaurant menu is dictated by what is pulled fresh from the grounds that morning.
No two rooms are the same: Expect unique vintage finds and an almost cluttered, personal sense of style in your retreat.
The bar is the evening focal point: The cozy, intimate bar is the place to be for a nightcap after a day out in the country air.
The Pig offers an immersive countryside experience in the heart of the picturesque Cotswolds.
