THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Soho Hotel, Firmdale Hotels
The Soho Hotel opened in 2004 as Soho's first luxury hotel, built on the site of a former multi-story car park. Kit Kemp and her husband Tim founded Firmdale Hotels, and this became one of their signature properties. Kemp designs every Firmdale hotel herself in what's become known as the Kit Kemp look: bold colors, contrasting fabrics and patterns, modern British style mixed with one-off pieces bought at art fairs. Her aesthetic spawned a thousand imitations, but the originals remain distinctly hers. The hotel sits on a quiet mews between Dean Street and Wardour Street, tucked away from the chaos while being surrounded by some of London's best restaurants, bars, theaters, and nightlife. All 96 rooms are individually designed with floor-to-ceiling warehouse-style windows and Kemp's signature use of color and pattern. A 10-foot Botero bronze cat dominates the lobby, and the Drawing Room features works by Breon O'Casey, Peter Collins, and François Bard. Two private screening rooms with Poltrona Frau leather armchairs host Sunday Film Club, where you can have lunch or afternoon tea followed by a 3:30pm screening. Refuel restaurant and bar serves British-European brasserie classics with pre- and post-theater set menus. There's live music every Wednesday evening, and the bar's "Soho Original" cocktails are inspired by classic cars as a nod to the building's former life. The location is about as central as it gets: five-minute walk to Oxford Street, seven minutes to Piccadilly Circus, one minute to Soho Square. This is very much for people who want to be in the absolute center of West End action. The clientele skews creative industry, theater-goers, and anyone who gets the appeal of that specific Soho energy where media, fashion, and nightlife intersect. The vibe is sophisticated London boutique hotel rather than grand dame establishment. If you want residential quiet, you'd be better off at Number Sixteen in South Kensington. If you want buzz, central location, and design-forward interiors that feel distinctly London, this is the one.
