THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

AC Santo Mauro, Autograph Collection by Marriott

There is a particular type of Madrid hotel that exists outside the city's usual rhythms entirely, and Santo Mauro is the archetype. It sits on Calle Zurbano in Almagro, on a quiet, embassy-lined street between Paseo de la Castellana and Calle Santa Engracia, hidden behind high walls and the canopy of several-hundred-year-old chestnut trees. The building was constructed in the 1890s as the private residence of the Duke of Santo Mauro, a figure of considerable influence in the Madrid of his day, and the hotel was created within it, across three interconnected buildings set around a formal garden with fountains and terraces. The effect upon arrival is of having been admitted somewhere, which is not the same thing as simply checking in. The design draws on French Classicism, the architecture having been conceived in the manner of the Parisian palaces of the same era, and the interiors reflect the Duke's own aesthetic accumulations. The Red Room reads as pure French style, composed and unhurried, while the Chinese Lounge is fitted with the oriental pieces the Duke collected on his travels, objects that have remained in place rather than been curated into something self-conscious. The former library has been converted into La Biblioteca, the hotel's main restaurant, which serves Mediterranean cooking at a level consistent with its setting. The Gin Bar, installed in a room with Art Deco detailing, anchors the evenings. Throughout, the 49 rooms and suites carry individual character: floor-to-ceiling windows hung with silk drapes, king-size beds, bathrooms with soaking tubs, and the kind of quiet that is difficult to achieve in a capital city and that guests tend to mention in reviews with some surprise. The garden is genuinely exceptional for a hotel of this size in central Madrid, a private green space where breakfast on the terrace in good weather becomes the kind of detail that makes the whole stay. The surrounding neighborhood, Almagro, runs at a different register from the busier tourist circuits, with Museo Sorolla a seven-minute walk away, the Salamanca district and its shopping within easy reach, and the Prado accessible in roughly fifteen minutes by car. It is not a hotel that makes demands on you to engage with it, which in practice means guests tend to find themselves staying longer in the building than they had planned. Santo Mauro has been part of both Marriott's Autograph Collection and, more recently, the Luxury Collection, a shift in branding that has done nothing to alter the character of the place. It has also, for what it is worth, served as the Beckhams' first residence in Madrid, a fact the hotel does not advertise and which tells you something about the clientele it quietly attracts. The short version: A 19th-century ducal palace hidden behind high walls in the embassy quarter of Almagro, with 49 individually designed rooms, a formal garden shaded by ancient chestnut trees, and the Duke's former library converted into the main restaurant. One of the most genuinely secluded and aristocratic stays in Madrid, best suited to those who want the city available but not pressing.
