THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Can Cota Boutique Hotel

Most people who visit Mallorca see the coast. The island's interior is another matter entirely, and Selva is a good argument for why it deserves more time. It sits at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana, the UNESCO World Heritage mountain range that runs the northwest of the island, a village of around 3,000 people with a 13th-century Gothic church at its high point, stone houses, narrow streets, and a weekly Wednesday market that is for locals first and visitors second. The olive groves around the nearby village of Caimari produce some of the best olive oil on the island. The monastery of Lluc, one of Mallorca's most important pilgrimage sites, is a short drive up into the mountains. The northern beaches of Alcudia and Muro are twenty minutes in the other direction. Palma is thirty minutes by car. Selva itself has no tourist infrastructure to speak of, which is precisely the point. The Mallorcan concept is poc a poc, little by little, a pace of life that the villages of the Tramuntana foothills embody better than anywhere else on the island. Can Cota is a ten-room boutique hotel in a historic house on one of Selva's upper streets, positioned high enough that all the rooms face south and look out over the plain of Mallorca to the Bay of Alcudia and the sea beyond. The views alone justify the booking: on a clear morning you are looking at almost the entire island laid out below you, terraced olive groves and almond trees and red earth all the way to the water. The house has been in continuous use for centuries and the rooms are named after the Cota sisters, the original owners, a small tribute to the women who shaped the building's history and by extension the village itself. The interiors are warm and thoughtfully done, local materials, marble, wood and white walls, history present in the architecture without being made into theatre, and the whole place has the feeling of somewhere that has always been exactly this. There is a pool, a spa, a wine cellar, an honesty bar, and a covered garage with e-bike charging. Breakfast is freshly cooked with vegetables from the garden, eaten on the terrace with those views, and guests consistently describe it as the best part of the morning. This is not La Residencia, and it does not try to be. It is warmer, quieter, more personal, the kind of place where the host knows your name by the second morning. This is for the person who wants to cycle the Tramuntana roads that professional teams train on all winter, or hike the stone paths between villages that date back to the 13th century, and come back to somewhere quiet and well-considered at the end of the day. For people who already know the island, the inland version is often the one that keeps them coming back. The short version: A ten-room boutique hotel in the hilltop village of Selva, at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana, with panoramic views over the entire Mallorcan plain to the Bay of Alcudia. Named after the women who originally owned the house, cycling and hiking country on the doorstep, beach twenty minutes away, Palma thirty. The inland, poc a poc version of Mallorca for people who already know the coast.
