THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Teranka
Formentera is the smallest of the inhabited Balearic Islands, three nautical miles from Ibiza and about as different from it as it is possible to be. There is no airport. You fly into Ibiza and take a ferry, which takes between twenty-five minutes and an hour depending on the boat, and the crossing alone does something to the pace of your thinking. The island is twenty kilometres long, mostly flat, covered in pine forests, salt flats, and protected dunes, and has five small villages, no motorways, and beaches that appear regularly on lists of the best in Europe, Ses Illetes in particular showing up in the same conversations as the Caribbean. The water is shallow and translucent in a way that photographs cannot actually capture, somewhere between turquoise and pale gold depending on the light and the time of day. Formentera was where the artists, musicians and free spirits went when Ibiza started getting too organised. Bob Dylan, members of Pink Floyd, and a generation of counterculture figures made it their base in the sixties and seventies, and the island has never entirely shed that DNA. The vibe is barefoot, unhurried, and genuinely indifferent to being fashionable, which paradoxically makes it one of the most quietly fashionable places in the Mediterranean. You eat fresh prawns at a chiringuito on the sand and drink cold wine at sunset and that is, for most people who come here, the entire itinerary. The crowd is relaxed, cosmopolitan, and in the business of proper rest rather than being seen resting. It is not Ibiza. That is the point. Teranka sits between pine forest and the long white beach of Es Migjorn on the south side of the island, tucked back from the water in a way that gives it seclusion without sacrificing proximity. It opened in 2023, is owned by Luxury Hotel Partners, the group behind the Marbella Club, and is the kind of property that arrives fully formed rather than finding its feet. Thirty-five rooms and suites are distributed across three buildings named Mar, Tierra and Cielo, each looking out over either the sea or the pine canopy, with natural materials, warm stone, organic textures, and the kind of beds guests describe as sleep as therapy. The aesthetic is pared back and elemental, with an ever-changing contemporary art collection and sculpture park throughout the estate that makes the place feel genuinely cultured rather than decorated. Rooms come with private outdoor spaces, deep bathtubs, rain showers, and a quiet that has to be experienced to be understood. The restaurant, Teranka Garden, is set under olive trees with an alfresco kitchen, and the food follows the island's logic: elevated simplicity built on local produce and Balearic flavours, fish caught that morning, vegetables grown nearby. The rooftop bar looks out over the pine canopy to the beach and handles the kind of sunsets that make people rebook before they have left. Morning yoga, kayaking, paddleboarding, and outdoor gym equipment woven into the forest edge are available for those who want them. Visiting practitioners run spa retreats and treatments for those who don't. This is for the person who has found Ibiza and decided they want what's on the other side of the water. The short version: A 35-room boutique hotel in the pine forests of Formentera, fifty metres from one of Europe's finest beaches. Contemporary art throughout, rooms built around natural materials and island light, an outdoor restaurant under olive trees, and a rooftop bar with the kind of sunset views that are the actual reason people come here. Open May to October. No airport, no noise, no agenda.
