THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Santos Gran Hotel Miramar
Málaga is on Spain's southern coast, two hours from Madrid by high-speed train and about two hours from most Western European cities by plane. For decades it was the airport people flew into before immediately driving somewhere else, which was their loss, because Málaga has quietly become one of the most interesting cities in Spain. It has Moorish fortresses, a Roman theatre, and more museums per square kilometre than most cities twice its size, including the Picasso Museum (he was born here), the Carmen Thyssen, and the only Centre Pompidou outside France. The food scene has developed seriously in recent years, with a Michelin-starred restaurant, José Carlos García, right on the port, and excellent tapas all over the historic centre. The beach, La Malagueta, is ten minutes' walk from the old town. The weather is the best in continental Europe, with over 300 sunny days a year and temperatures mild enough to visit comfortably from October through to May. The honest version of Málaga is that it has become extremely popular, extremely fast. It is no longer under the radar and the locals will tell you so, loudly. The city centre is crowded in summer, prices have risen sharply, and July and August bring the kind of heat and tourist density that turns sightseeing into an ordeal. The sweet spot is May or October: warm enough for the beach, cool enough to actually walk around all day, and a city that still has enough room to breathe. September is also excellent if you want warm water and fewer people. Winter is genuinely underrated if you don't need the beach, temperatures hovering around 17-18°C, empty museums, and tables available at restaurants that spend summer turning people away. Is it fancy or tacky? Both, depending on where you look. The Costa del Sol has a long history of package tourism and hen parties, and parts of the wider coast still fit that description precisely. Málaga the city is different. It has a real cultural identity, serious food, genuine neighbourhoods, and residents who care enough about it to march in the streets when they feel it slipping away. Stay in the historic centre or along the seafront at La Caleta and you are in a city that takes itself seriously. Stray toward the resort strips to the west and you are somewhere else entirely. The Gran Hotel Miramar positions itself at the serious end of all of this. The building was completed in 1926, opened by King Alfonso XIII, and is the kind of place that has survived a civil war and a stint as a courthouse without losing its spine. The architecture mixes Belle Époque grandeur with Moorish and Nasrid detailing throughout, the rooms are built around a domed Patio Real, and the sea-facing rooms have balconies over the Bay of Málaga that are worth the upgrade on their own. There are five dining options including a rooftop sushi bar with cocktails and views, a pool bar, and afternoon tea in the lobby. The Botanic Spa by Sisley runs across two floors with a full hydrotherapy circuit, sauna, Turkish bath, and treatment rooms using genuinely Moorish architecture rather than as decorative shorthand. The beach is twenty metres from the front door. This is Málaga for people who want the real version of it, at the right time of year. The short version: A 1926 palace on the Málaga seafront, the only five-star in the city, with Moorish interiors, sea-view balconies, and a Sisley spa. Go in May or October. Walk to the Picasso Museum, eat espetos by the beach, stay out late. Not the Costa del Sol you were warned about.
