THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Abadia Retuerta Ledomaine
Ribera del Duero is Spain's other great red wine region, two hours north of Madrid, and the kind of place that people who have been tend to keep to themselves. It sits on a high plateau in Castile and León, following the Duero River through a landscape of vineyards, medieval castles, and near-total silence. The wines are almost entirely Tempranillo-based, grown at altitude where violent temperature swings between day and night produce reds that are full-bodied, structured, and genuinely age-worthy, on par with serious Burgundy or Napa but with more old-world restraint. Vega Sicilia is here. So is Pingus. The food is lechazo, milk-fed lamb from a wood oven, and the countryside around Peñafiel, with its castle rising above the town like something from a history textbook, is the kind of place that makes people reconsider where they thought they wanted to grow old. The people who come to Abadía Retuerta are not here by accident. This is not a hotel you stumble upon or book because it was on a listicle. It takes a specific kind of person to choose a 12th-century monastery in the middle of a Castilian wine estate over a city, a beach, or even a more obvious luxury destination. They tend to have strong opinions about wine, or about architecture, or about silence. They have usually already done the obvious European trips and are now doing the considered ones. Choosing this place says something: that you know the difference between going somewhere beautiful and going somewhere that means something. Abadía Retuerta began as a winery before it became a hotel, which is the right order of things. The estate was founded on the site of the Abbey of Santa María de Retuerta, a Romanesque monastery dating to 1146 that had fallen into disrepair. The abbey was restored by architect Marco Serra and reopened in 2012, and the result is 30 rooms and suites set inside a functioning wine estate of 500 acres, with the 12th-century cloister, chapter house, and church intact around you. Unusually, Abadía Retuerta holds its own Pago designation, Spain's highest classification for a single-estate wine, separate from the Ribera del Duero DO entirely, which tells you something about how seriously the winemaking is taken. The estate is large enough that the only way to properly see the vineyards is by Jeep, which the hotel organises, ending in the barrel room for a tasting. There is also a terrace wine bar, the Calicata, positioned right on the vineyard's edge for sunsets. The Refectorio restaurant, in the abbey's original 12th-century dining hall, holds a Michelin star and a Michelin Green Star for sustainability, serving a tasting menu built around the landscape outside the window. The Santuario spa is built around an indoor pool and runs treatments incorporating the estate's own wine-derived products, alongside Tibetan singing bowl sessions that may or may not be your thing but are at least committed to. Every room includes an original Miró lithograph. Butler service is standard across the property. The whole place is adults only and has a meaningful sense of remove from the world. This is a hotel that exists entirely on its own terms, in the middle of a landscape that earns it. The short version: A 12th-century Romanesque abbey restored into a 30-room wine estate hotel in Spain's finest red wine region, two hours from Madrid. Michelin-starred dining in the original refectory, 500 acres of vineyards with its own Pago designation, a spa, and Miró lithographs in every room. Adults only. Go in September during harvest, or in spring when the vines are just coming back.
