THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Sandhamn Seglarhotell
The Stockholm Archipelago is 30,000 islands stretching out into the Baltic, and it is where Stockholmers have spent their summers for as long as anyone can remember. It is not a tourist destination in the conventional sense. There are no famous monuments, no obvious reason to go unless someone has told you about it, and the boat journey out there is part of the experience rather than an inconvenience to be managed. Sandhamn is one of the furthest islands you can reach, which is precisely why the sailing crowd settled here, and the fact that most international visitors have never heard of it is, for the people who do come, a significant part of the appeal. Sandhamn is a small island at the outer edge of the Stockholm Archipelago, about two hours by boat from the city, and has been the centre of Swedish sailing culture for well over a century. No cars, pine forests, wooden houses painted in traditional red and yellow, and a harbour that fills with sailing boats every summer. The Seglarhotell has been at the heart of all of it since the late 19th century, sitting right on the harbour with the kind of loyal returning crowd that archipelago hotels either earn over generations or never get at all. This is a four-star hotel, not a five-star one, and the rooms reflect that in part. Some have sea views and balconies and are genuinely lovely; others are more straightforward, so it is worth being specific when you book because the difference between a harbour-view room and a back-facing one is significant. Where the hotel really earns its place is the spa: indoor pool, sauna, hot tub, and a floating sauna raft for cold dipping that is very much the point in this part of the world. The restaurant works with seasonal and local ingredients, the breakfast buffet is excellent, and in summer the hotel runs several additional cafés and bars including a poolside Sea Club that becomes a fun hub. The reason to come is Sandhamn itself. The island is small enough to walk across in twenty minutes, the swimming off the rocks is remarkable in summer, and the atmosphere of being somewhere that Swedes have been escaping to for generations is genuinely difficult to find elsewhere. In winter it quiets down in a way that feels restorative rather than empty, and the sauna culture makes perfect sense with cold grey water just outside. The short version: The location and the experience are the main event here, and both are excellent. Book a harbour-view room, use the spa, and spend as much time on the island as possible. Best in summer, surprisingly good in winter.
