THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Villa Copenhagen

Copenhagen has been quietly running one of the more interesting experiments in European urban living for the past two decades, and the results are visible everywhere you look. It is a city that became simultaneously one of the world's great food destinations, a global reference point for design and architecture, and a functioning model of sustainable urban planning without becoming self-congratulatory about any of it. The restaurants that followed Noma's redefinition of Nordic cuisine have spread the logic of local, seasonal and fermented across every price point and neighbourhood. The design tradition, running from Arne Jacobsen and Finn Juhl through to the studios currently defining contemporary Scandinavian aesthetics, is present in the public spaces and homes in a way that feels like cultural inheritance rather than branding. None of this is performed for visitors. It is simply how the city operates. The building on Tietgensgade was constructed in 1912 as the headquarters of the Danish Central Post and Telegraph Office, its granite Neo-Baroque façade occupying a commanding position directly opposite the Tivoli Gardens and adjacent to Copenhagen Central Station. The architect was Hack Kampmann, one of the most significant Danish architects of his era, whose other works include the Copenhagen Police Headquarters and the Aarhus Theatre. The building opened as Villa Copenhagen in July 2020 following a conversion that preserved the monumental exterior and grand interior spaces while inserting a thoroughly contemporary hotel behind and within them. The 390 rooms draw their aesthetic from the grand Copenhagen residences of the early 20th century and from the quiet interior light of the painter Vilhelm Hammershøi, whose canvases of muted Danish interiors constitute one of the most distinctive visual signatures of that period. Original window detailing and parquet floors sit alongside restrained Scandinavian contemporary furnishings in a palette that is neither nostalgic nor coldly modern. Suites include collaborations with ferm LIVING and Shamballa Jewels. The central courtyard, glassed over, functions as the social heart of the building, the Courtyard Bar drawing locals and guests throughout the day. The Rug Bakery, with its sourdough, pastries and seasonal treats, has become one of the better morning addresses in the neighbourhood. On the rooftop, a heated 25-metre pool operates year-round above the Tivoli treetops. The hotel's sustainability commitments are embedded in the operation rather than added as marketing, the pool sustainably heated, surplus ingredients repurposed throughout the kitchen, and a B Corp framework underpinning the group's wider commitments. The guests are design-literate and food-focused, typically professionals in their mid-thirties to late forties who have done the European capitals and are choosing Copenhagen specifically for its restaurant scene or its design culture, or both. They are the kind of traveller who books a table at Alchemist before they book a room, who knows the difference between ferm LIVING and Menu, and who finds waking up inside Hack Kampmann's 1912 civic building a considerably more interesting frame for a city stay than anything built recently. The price point is five-star without the formality of a traditional luxury hotel, and the atmosphere is closer to a very well-designed members' club than a grand hotel in the classic sense. The short version: A 390-room hotel in the former Central Post and Telegraph headquarters designed by Hack Kampmann in 1912, directly opposite the Tivoli Gardens in central Copenhagen, opened 2020. Vilhelm Hammershøi-inflected interiors, ferm LIVING-designed suites, a courtyard bar drawing the neighbourhood, a Rug Bakery beloved by locals, and a year-round rooftop heated pool above the city. Five-star in standard, members' club in atmosphere. The Copenhagen address for those who booked the restaurant before the room.
