THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Masseria Calderisi
A masseria is a Puglian fortified farmhouse, and the Valle d'Itria has several of them operating as hotels now. Masseria Calderisi stands out among them, and it has an origin story that is genuinely unusual. In 2010, a German couple, Max and Jutta von Braunmühl, got married in Puglia and fell so completely in love with the region that they spent the next decade looking for a property to buy. In 2019 they found it: a 17th-century masseria outside Savelletri di Fasano, thoroughly derelict, on 24 acres of olive groves between the coast and the Valle d'Itria. They renovated it, and opened in spring 2021. This is not a grand hotel. It is 24 rooms, a restaurant, a pool, and a beach club, run by people who chose this particular life deliberately. The rooms are spread across the original stone buildings, the main farmhouse, the former stables, the old tower, all whitewashed, all with private terraces or gardens, and designed by Jutta with a mix of Puglian-made furniture, Moroccan and French artisan pieces, Apulian stone bathrooms, and Cotto Vietri ceramic tiles. The aesthetic is warm and specific rather than grand. Aesop products in the bathrooms and Marshall Bluetooth speakers in the rooms are the kind of details that get the calibration right. If you are looking for a spa with multiple pools and a formal dining room, this is not your hotel. If you want to spend a week eating very well, reading under ancient olive trees, and arriving at the beach in a Land Rover Defender, it probably is. La Corte, the restaurant set around the central piazza, cooks a contemporary version of Puglian cuisine using produce from the kitchen garden and neighbouring farms, fish from the nearby coast, and mozzarella from local dairies. The Gioia pool bar handles long lunches in the shade of olive and citrus trees. The Apero Bar, a candlelit outdoor terrace, is where evenings start: Negronis on cushions with cicadas, which is exactly the right way to transition into dinner. There is also a small spa and a boutique stocking local ceramics from Grottaglie and pieces from Etro, Max Mara, and Valentino alongside the masseria's own olive oil and preserves. The private beach club at Calderisi Beach is a short drive away and the hotel shuttle runs regularly. Brindisi airport is 40 minutes away; Bari is about an hour. The hotel is open April through October, with June, September, and early October the sweet spots for weather without peak season crowds and prices. The short version: A personal, owner-run masseria with 24 rooms, an excellent restaurant, and a private beach club. The luxury here is in the quality of the food, the setting, and the ease of the days, not in the scale of the facilities.
