THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Masseria Grieco
This is what a working Puglian farmhouse looks like when a local family turns it into a boutique hotel without stripping out its soul. Masseria Grieco sits in the Itria Valley between Ostuni and Ceglie Messapica, surrounded by olive groves and countryside that still feels genuinely rural rather than manicured for tourists. The property centers around a traditional two-story masseria built from pietra viva, the local limestone that's white as marble. Eight trulli dot the grounds, those conical stone structures that define Puglia's architecture. The main building has a grand entrance staircase that opens onto a large courtyard, and there's a stone oven where they host cooking experiences. The 27 rooms mix original details with modern comfort. The style is exposed stone walls, vaulted ceilings, soundproof windows, and proper air conditioning. Some rooms have private verandas. Everything is finished to a high standard without feeling overly designed or precious about the restoration. The infinity pool overlooks the countryside and works particularly well at sunset. Gardens are planted with native species, olive trees, and a working vegetable garden that supplies the restaurant. You'll see hummingbirds in the mornings. The restaurant changes its menu daily based on what's available locally and what's growing on the property. Traditional Apulian dishes with ingredients either sourced from nearby farms or grown right here. Breakfast is a proper buffet with local pastries, cheeses, and preserved fruits. They make their own liqueurs, which they offer at the end of dinner. The whole operation is family-run, which shows in the attention to detail. Staff know the property and the region well enough to give you actual recommendations instead of generic tourist advice. This is agriturismo done properly. You're staying on a working farm that happens to have beautiful rooms and excellent food, not a resort pretending to be rustic.
