THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Le Negresco
There is a version of the French Riviera that existed before it became a brand, and Le Negresco is one of the last places where you can still feel it. The hotel has been on the Promenade des Anglais since 1913, its pink Belle Époque dome visible from almost everywhere in Nice, and it has been a French Historic Monument since 1974, which means it cannot really change even if it wanted to. It does not want to. While much of the Riviera has drifted towards the kind of minimalist luxury that could be anywhere, Le Negresco has remained aggressively, cheerfully itself: doormen in flamboyant uniforms, public rooms filled with an art collection that runs from the 17th century to Dalí and Niki de Saint Phalle, and 102 rooms and 26 suites each decorated to a different period of French art history, so that moving between floors feels faintly like moving between centuries. The rooms vary considerably in this regard, from Louis XV to Empire to French Riviera, and the experience of staying in them depends almost entirely on how much you enjoy that kind of committed theatricality. If you do, you will love it here. The Michelin-starred restaurant Le Chantecler is worth booking for dinner, led by chef Virginie Basselot, and La Rotonde downstairs is the right call for a more relaxed lunch with a view over the bay. The beach club is directly on the Promenade, the old town is a short walk east, and the hotel's position means that Nice is genuinely on your doorstep in a way that feels effortless rather than convenient. This is a hotel with a strong personality, and the people who adore it tend to adore it completely, returning year after year to the same suite. If you prefer your hotels quiet and undecorated, it will be too much. If you have any fondness for grand European hotels that take their own history seriously, it will be exactly right. The short version: A Belle Époque landmark on the Promenade des Anglais, with 128 rooms decorated across the full arc of French art history, a Michelin-starred restaurant, and a personality so singular that most guests either fall completely in love with it or know immediately it is not for them.
