THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Corral del Rey
Seville rewards the culturally curious more than almost anywhere else in Spain, and Corral del Rey is the hotel that understands that guest. It sits in the Barrio Alfalfa, five minutes' walk from the cathedral, on a cobbled street too narrow for taxis, behind a pair of heavy studded Moorish doors that give very little away from the outside. Inside it is a 17th-century casa palacio spread across two buildings, with seventeen rooms, a rooftop plunge pool looking directly at the Giralda, and the particular atmosphere of a private house assembled by someone with a strong and idiosyncratic point of view. That point of view belongs to interior designer Kuky Mora-Figueroa. Roman marble columns sit alongside medieval Mudéjar woodwork, Afghan linen drapes hang from wrought iron rails, carved wooden elephants from Rajasthan share space with original 18th-century shutters and stucco walls. It is maximalist without being chaotic, and personal in a way that most boutique hotels gesture toward without achieving. The hotel also functions as a working contemporary art gallery, representing several international artists whose work runs through the public spaces, which gives the whole place an artistic seriousness that the design alone would only imply. Three penthouse suites have private terraces and plunge pools. Marble and limestone bathrooms throughout have walk-in rain showers. The all-day tapas bar and rooftop terrace, where breakfast is served with the Giralda directly ahead, are where the day begins and frequently ends. The staff are the kind that make the difference between a good city stay and a genuinely useful one: they know where to eat, they will book it, and their recommendations hold up. This is a hotel for someone who comes to Seville to be inside it, not at a remove from it, and who wants their base to have as strong a point of view as the streets outside. The short version: A 17th-century casa palacio in the Barrio Alfalfa, five minutes from the cathedral, with seventeen individually and eclectically decorated rooms, a working contemporary art gallery, a rooftop plunge pool with Giralda views, and staff who know the city properly. For the art-minded, culturally curious traveller who wants a hotel with a genuine point of view.
