Boutique Hotel Posada Terra Santa
Palma is the capital of Mallorca and one of the truly good cities of the Mediterranean, a place with a Gothic cathedral that dominates the harbour like a small mountain, an Arab bath house with a citrus garden that has been there since the Moorish occupation, and a historic quarter of narrow streets, Baroque palaces and hidden courtyards that rewards serious wandering. The Passeig del Born connects it all, running from the waterfront toward the old town with the kind of confident tree-lined elegance that Spanish cities do better than most. The city has a strong food scene, a serious art calendar anchored by the Es Baluard museum of modern art, and the quietly fashionable neighbourhood of Santa Catalina a ten-minute walk to the west. It is large enough to fill several days and compact enough to navigate on foot. Fifteen minutes from the airport. Posada Terra Santa is hidden in the quietest part of the old town, in the Canamunt quarter, on a narrow street a few steps from the Basilica de Sant Francesc. The building was constructed in 1576 as the manor house of the Boixador barons and was sensitively restored by New York studio Rockwell Group, who were brought back for a second renovation in 2024 and have continued to layer the original Gothic architecture with considered contemporary design. The entrance through heavy wooden doors opens into a tea-light-lit courtyard, the original stone and centuries-old earthenware jars intact alongside fresh flowers and a Morgan 3 Wheeler parked where the horses once stood. There are 26 rooms, each with king beds, natural fabrics, and the Gothic heritage increasingly present as you move up the categories, stone arches, beamed ceilings, and original marés columns woven into the rooms themselves. The old granary has been converted into a small spa with an indoor pool and sauna. The rooftop terrace has a plunge pool overlooking Palma's rooftops and the Basilica towers. The library lounge, the Salón Inglés, is filled with deep armchairs and vintage photographs of the city. The restaurant, La Despensa del Barón, serves beneath 14th-century stone arches. The feel of the place is intimate and genuinely residential, a house that has always been lived in rather than a building that was converted. The people who choose it tend to be those who want to be inside the historic fabric of the city rather than adjacent to it, who find a hidden courtyard more compelling than a rooftop view over the bay, and who book the Basilica-view room knowing they will wake up to something that has been there for seven centuries. It is the kind of hotel that is difficult to leave in the morning. The short version: A 16th-century aristocratic manor house in the quietest street of Palma's old town, restored by Rockwell Group and hidden behind heavy wooden doors in the Canamunt quarter. Twenty-six rooms with Gothic arches and natural fabrics, a courtyard with a vintage Morgan, a granary spa, a rooftop plunge pool, and a restaurant beneath 14th-century stone arches. Steps from the Basilica de Sant Francesc, ten minutes from everything else. The most characterful address in the city
