Finca Cortesin Golf & Spa
The western end of the Costa del Sol is a different proposition from the stretch around Marbella and Puerto Banús that most people imagine when they think of southern Spain. East of Estepona the coast becomes more developed and more performative, the marina circuit doing its thing. West of Estepona, toward Sotogrande and Gibraltar, the landscape opens up and quietens down, cork oak forests coming down toward the coast, the whitewashed village of Casares perched dramatically on a limestone hillside fifteen kilometres inland, the outline of Morocco visible across the Strait on a clear morning. Sotogrande, the largest privately owned residential development in Andalusia, sits at the southern end of this stretch, home to Valderrama and a polo scene and the kind of European wealth that prefers not to announce itself. This is the Costa del Sol for people who are not especially interested in the Costa del Sol. Finca Cortesin sits between Estepona and Sotogrande, tucked into the hills a few minutes from the sea, on a privately owned estate that manages to feel entirely removed from the coast road despite being less than a mile from the beach. The hotel opened in 2006, built in the Andalusian finca tradition around two palatial courtyards, four-metre ceilings, 23,000 square metres of manicured gardens, four swimming pools, and an architecture that is grand without being heavy. There are 67 suites, all of them spacious by any standard, from 50 to 200 square metres, each with a private terrace or balcony. The spa is one of the finest on the Costa del Sol, with a Thai treatment programme, a unique snow cave, indoor pool, hammam and sauna. The beach club, open seasonally, has its own infinity pool, restaurant and bar five minutes from the hotel. There are tennis and padel courts, and a Jack Nicklaus Academy on site for those who want coaching. The golf course, designed by Cabell Robinson and rated among the five best in Spain by Golf Digest, hosted the Volvo World Match Play Championship three times and the Solheim Cup in 2023, which signals both the quality of the layout and the level at which the resort operates. It is 7,000 metres from the back tees, routed through native oak trees and barrancas above the coast, with sea views from the upper holes on clear days. The dining is serious throughout: the signature restaurant Kabuki Raw holds a Michelin star and serves a Japanese-Mediterranean menu that is one of the better meals in the region. The guests are golfers, inevitably, but also those who simply want a large and beautiful suite, exceptional service, and a base from which to do very little or to explore the surrounding area at their own pace. Ronda is an hour inland. Gibraltar is fifteen minutes. Marbella and Puerto Banús are thirty minutes east. The hotel draws a quietly international crowd, European and American, the kind that owns property somewhere on this stretch of coast or is seriously considering it. The pace is unhurried and the register is high without being theatrical about it. The short version: A palatial 67-suite resort on a private estate between Estepona and Sotogrande, on the quieter western end of the Costa del Sol. Championship golf course ranked in Spain's top five, a Michelin-starred Japanese-Mediterranean restaurant, one of the finest spas in Andalusia with a snow cave, four pools, and a seasonal beach club five minutes away. Fifty minutes from Málaga airport, fifteen from Gibraltar. Open year-round.
