THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Gran Hotel Mas d' en Bruno

The village of Torroja del Priorat has around a hundred inhabitants, a Romanesque church, and views over terraced vineyards to the Montsant cliffs that have been more or less unchanged for centuries. It sits in the heart of the Priorat, the DOQ wine region two hours southwest of Barcelona whose black llicorella slate soil produces some of the most concentrated and sought-after red wines in Spain. The landscape here is steep, dramatic, and almost theatrical, narrow roads carved into hillsides above dark green valleys, medieval villages perched on ridgelines, and vines growing at gradients that require everything to be done by hand. If you know what the Priorat is, arriving feels like finally getting somewhere you have been meaning to go. If you don't, it tends to convert people quickly. Gran Hotel Mas d'en Bruno opened in 2023 on a historic estate named after its 18th-century owner, a masía with more than five centuries of continuous agricultural use, and it is the only five-star hotel in the region. The conversion is accomplished and genuinely contemporary, rich woods, flashes of red marble, glass fireplaces, floor-to-ceiling windows framing the vineyards, and high ceilings with mezzanine levels fitted with armchairs and bookshelves, the whole thing managing a sleek-meets-cosy balance that suits the landscape rather than competing with it. There are 24 suites across the main masía building and the Atelier, most with private terraces or balconies overlooking the vines, and the flagship Bruno's Suite, a 120-square-metre apartment with its own private garden, Roman bathtub, dining room, and fireplace. The spa occupies an ancient wine and olive-oil mill, with a hammam, sauna, heated indoor pool, and treatment rooms. The infinity pool looks directly over the vineyard to the mountains beyond. The hotel's electric Mini Cooper is available for guests to borrow for excursions into the surrounding villages and wineries. The restaurant operates under two names depending on the hour: Tarraco at lunch, serving Roman-inspired Catalan cuisine on the terrace, and Vinum at dinner, an elaborate gastronomic tasting menu built around local produce and paired with Priorat wines from the cellar. The cellar is well worth the visit independently of dinner. The guests who find their way here tend to be serious about wine without making it the whole point, equally happy spending a morning at the infinity pool with a glass of something well-chosen as they are doing a guided tour of the surrounding wineries. They are the kind of travellers who booked two hours from Barcelona deliberately, who have probably been to most of the obvious places and are now drawn to regions with a story and a landscape that most people haven't discovered yet. The hotel is polished and full-service in a way that feels earned rather than imposed, and the pace, inevitably, adjusts itself to the Priorat's own rhythm within a day of arriving. The short version: A five-star boutique hotel opened in 2023 on a 500-year-old estate in Torroja del Priorat, the only luxury property in the region. Twenty-four suites in the historic masía and Atelier, an infinity pool in the vines, a spa in an ancient oil mill, and a gastronomic tasting menu built around Priorat wines. Two hours from Barcelona. For people who want the full drama of one of Spain's greatest wine landscapes with a super serious hotel to match.
