Kona Village A Rosewood Resort
There is a version of Hawaii that has nothing to do with pool bars and swim-up cocktails, and the Big Island is most of it. Lava fields that run straight into the ocean, mornings quiet enough to hear the water, a coastline that feels genuinely untouched in a way that very few places in the Pacific still do. It asks something of you, a willingness to slow down, to be somewhere rather than simply be away, and Kona Village is built around exactly that premise. The resort was legendarily itself in its original 1960s incarnation, destroyed by a tsunami in 2011, and reopened under Rosewood in 2023. What makes the rebuild remarkable is that it didn't smooth anything out. The 150 thatched-roof hales are spread across 81 acres of lava coastline with no televisions, ancient petroglyphs visible in the lava fields across the grounds, and a coconut you place outside your door when you want privacy. These are not design gestures. They are the original DNA of the place, kept deliberately, and they tell you quickly whether this is the kind of hotel you will fall in love with or the kind that will make you restless. The hales are beautiful in the way that confident, unfussy design tends to be. Warm woods, volcanic stone soaking tubs, outdoor rain showers, lanais with daybeds facing the water. The reef directly off the beach is among the best on the island, and mornings in it have a way of quietly restructuring the rest of the day around themselves. The Shipwreck Bar is built around the founders' restored original schooner and earns its reputation. Dinner at Moana is taken seriously, with ingredients that reflect where you are rather than simply what the kitchen can execute. This is a hotel that rewards people who are genuinely interested in the place they are staying in. The rates reflect that it knows what it is, and the experience reflects that it is right to. The short version: 150 thatched-roof hales on 81 acres of lava coastline on the Big Island, reopened in 2023 after a tsunami destroyed the 1960s original. No televisions, exceptional snorkelling off the reef, and an atmosphere designed for people who want to slow down somewhere genuinely beautiful rather than be entertained. One of the more singular places to stay in Hawaii.
