Les Fermes de Marie
There is a version of Megève that is about being seen, and a version that is about being warm and well-fed and properly in the mountains, and Les Fermes de Marie has always belonged to the second. Jean-Louis and Jocelyne Sibuet founded the hotel in 1989 with an idea that was original at the time and has since become a template: nine authentic alpine farmhouses, dismantled beam by beam from their original sites high in the hills, numbered, transported, and reassembled on concrete frames in a two-hectare park ten minutes from the village centre. The result is a hamlet rather than a hotel, the stone, timber, and weathered materials entirely genuine, the patina of every object earned rather than applied. The 70 rooms and 10 suites are spread across the nine interconnected chalets, each furnished with Savoyard antiques, handpicked by the Sibuets over decades, warm fabrics, stone fireplaces, and the kind of accumulated detail that takes years to achieve. The Pure Altitude spa, pioneer of mountain wellness in France and using its own alpine plant-based product line, runs to two pools, a jacuzzi, sauna, hammam, and a full treatment menu built around local herbs and aromatic oils. The restaurant serves regional cuisine and Savoyard specialities with the seriousness that Megève demands from its kitchens, and the Carnotzet in winter is devoted entirely to regional cheese dishes, fondue, and raclette, which is where the mood of the place becomes clearest. The kids' club is genuinely good, which is either relevant or not depending on who you are travelling with, and allows parents a quiet evening in the restaurant that the rest of the stay deserves. This is a hotel that has guests who return annually and have done for decades, which is the most useful information about it. The shuttle to the village and the slopes runs on demand until eleven at night, which means the ten-minute distance from Megève's centre functions as a buffer rather than an inconvenience. The short version: Seventy rooms and ten suites across nine reassembled 18th-century alpine farmhouses in a two-hectare park outside Megève, with a pioneering mountain spa, a serious kitchen, and the most authentically realised version of the Savoyard interior in the Alps.
