THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Palais Ronsard
The Palmeraie is the part of Marrakech that the city has been using as its escape for centuries, a belt of ancient palm groves between the medina and the Atlas foothills where the air is quieter and the light falls differently through the fronds. Most visitors never make it here, which is entirely their loss. Palais Ronsard is twenty minutes from Jemaa el-Fnaa, set within two hectares of mature gardens planted with century-old olive trees, Pierre de Ronsard roses, lily ponds, and fountains that do the work of cooling the air without mechanical assistance. The entrance announces nothing from the road; the gardens announce everything once you are inside. The 27 rooms and suites are arranged around two colonnaded pools, each with a private terrace or patio giving directly onto the garden, and six private pavilions scattered through the grounds each have their own pool and garden, which is the right accommodation choice for anyone who wants Marrakech at a remove. The interiors by Gil Dez blend French colonial architecture with Moroccan detail, carved plasterwork and zellige tiling against softer, more restrained European elements, and the result is a hotel that reads as genuinely of the place without being theatrical about it. Le Verger du Poète, the main restaurant, serves in the organic kitchen garden in warmer months, the produce grown on the estate's own farm. Le Jardin d'Hiver handles the more intimate evening dining. The spa, set within the gardens amid jasmine and bougainvillea, draws on Moroccan hammam tradition and Sothys protocols. This is a hotel for people who find the medina magnificent and exhausting in equal measure, and who want somewhere genuinely quiet to return to. The Jardin Majorelle and the YSL Museum are thirteen minutes by car. The souks are fifteen. Both feel a world away from the garden. The short version: Twenty-seven rooms and six private pavilions with pools in a two-hectare Palmeraie garden, with colonial-Moroccan interiors by Gil Dez, a farm-to-table restaurant, and the most complete sense of remove from Marrakech that twenty minutes by car can produce.
