Kronenhof Grand Hotel
The Kronenhof is one of those grand Swiss hotels that makes you stand up slightly straighter the moment you walk in. Built in the 19th century and overlooking the Roseg Glacier, it has that full Belle Époque confidence that Switzerland does so well. High ceilings, sweeping staircases, chandeliers, staff who have clearly done this for decades. It is formal, yes, but never stiff. Pontresina is quieter than St Moritz, and that is precisely the point. You are still in the Engadin, still skiing the same mountains, still within easy reach of everything, but the atmosphere is calmer and more self possessed. Staying here feels purposeful instead of flashy. Rooms are generous and traditional in the right way, with parquet floors, marble bathrooms, mountain views framed properly, and beds that are genuinely comfortable after a long ski day. Nothing is trying to be edgy or reinvent Alpine design. It is classic Swiss luxury executed properly. The spa is the real differentiator. It is enormous by Alpine standards and surprisingly modern compared to the rest of the hotel. Long pool, multiple saunas, treatment rooms that you will definitely want to spend time in. On a bad weather day, you could happily stay inside without feeling like you are missing out. Dinner is polished and precise, as you would expect, and breakfast is one of those long, unhurried affairs where you can plan the day over excellent bread and very strong coffee.
